What is your role at Faro?
My role spans store operations, store design and development, and marketing. In essence, I’m responsible for ensuring our customer experience is world class, and that anybody who engages with Faro as a business leaves feeling better than when they arrived.
What is Faro all about?
It is an innovative fashion retail start-up tackling the global overstock crisis. We source unsold inventory from leading global and local fashion brands and give it new life — selling it at up to 60% off in our curated, high-end Faro stores across South Africa. We want to make luxury fashion more accessible financially without compromising on the retail experience. We also refurbish tarnished garments for resale and are building in-house AI tools to help reduce waste.
How did you end up doing the work you do?
Honestly, it wasn’t a straight line. My life has always been orientated around people and what makes them tick, and I have always been drawn to building things — ideas, brands, teams — but I hopped around a lot before co-founding Faro. I’ve worked in education technology, e-commerce, beauty and nonprofit organisations. I was also an athlete, playing water polo for the South African women’s team. I realised I wasn’t going to be satisfied building someone else’s vision.
What do you think makes you good at what you do?
- Attention to detail. I am close to the detail, always.
- Problem solving. I’m not afraid of chaos or a blank page.
- I’m deeply curious.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The people. Internally, we’ve got an incredible team — as founders we feel lucky to build alongside them. And externally, seeing the reaction from customers who walk into a Faro store and feel something different — that never gets old.
What do you look for when recruiting people for your team?
Culture is a huge part of our hiring process. Also, grit and accountability. With the fast-paced environment we operate in, everybody needs to be a self-starter and high performer without micromanagement.
We hire people who care about the world and people around them. We want people who are proactive and treat the business as if it’s their own.
What advice do you have for young people starting their careers?
Embrace the doubt. Whether it’s self-doubt or concept doubt, the path isn’t linear, and it’s not meant to be. Every job I had taught me something that now shows up at Faro. You don’t have to have it all figured out.
