Mampara of the week: Kenny Kunene

Kenny Kunene, the reformed convict and now former Patriotic Alliance deputy leader, did his bit this week to further blur the lines between our politicians and criminals.

When police raided the home of murder accused Katiso “KT” Molefe, who faces murder charges related to the gangster-style killings of DJ Sumbody and Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, who should they find there but Kunene. He has since claimed he was there accompanying a journalist to interview Molefe, and that he doesn’t know the man.

Pull the other one, Kenny. With excuses that lame, it's little wonder his criminal career was cut short. As a politician, though, he can get away with just about anything, as evidenced by the failure of anyone in authority to bring him to book. His fellow reformed criminal, PA leader Gayton McKenzie, claims Kunene was “set up”. He would, wouldn’t he?

On Saturday, Kunene said he had quit his mayoral committee post and resigned as a councillor. He’ll be back, no doubt, but for now it’s good riddance.
